The D-Rig floating bait for carp fishing

© Grégory MARTIN

The legendary D-Rig carp leader is now available in a version specially designed to use floating baits such as pop-ups. Let's find out how to make this special version.

The D-Rig leader is used to bait dense or balanced baits, but it can be adapted to use floating baits. All you need to do is create a joint on the D-Rig leader to allow the hook and bait assembly to be lifted off the ground, while retaining the main advantages that characterize it.

D-Rig mechanism

The D-Rig allows you to present a moving bait on a D running along the shank of the hook. To make it, we use fluorocarbon, which has the particularity of being rigid. This rigidity, with its many advantages, does not allow us to use floating baits as we see fit. It is therefore necessary to make certain modifications in order to be able to use it efficiently and flexibly with floating baits such as Pop-ups.

The articulated D-Rig

To "break" the rigidity of the D-Rig leader and make it easy to use floating baits, you need to create a joint at the desired distance from the hook. The distance chosen will be the height at which the hook and bait will rise. To create this joint, we'll use a double ring which will also act as a sinker insert so that the entire leader doesn't lift off.

The materials required

To be adapted according to conditions, of course.

  • Shadow in diameter 40
  • Number 6 Chod Power Hooks
  • A micro ring swivel
  • A double ring
  • Lead paste
  • An anti-tangle sleeve
  • A pair of scissors
  • A lighter
  • A knot puller

Production stages

1) Cut approximately 20 cm of Shadow.

2) Tie the D-knot at the bottom of the hook shank at the curve.

3) Now that the base of the D-Rig is complete, fit a micro ring swivel.

4) Pass the Shadow through the outside of the eyelet, starting to form the D.

5) Tie a knot without any knot, making sure to go through the outside of the eyelet.

6) Keep the desired length, then fix the double ring with the fluoro tip.

7) Cut 15-20 cm of Shadow.

8) At the other end of the double ring, add Shadow to complete the length of the leader. Here again, the fluoro trick is perfect. Note that this trick avoids the memory effect of fluorocarbon.

9) Put on an anti-tangle sleeve.

10) Make the terminal loop of the leader (always a fluoro tip), otherwise you can make an 8 loop.

11) Put lead paste on the ring furthest from the hook (without covering it completely).

This articulated version of the D-Rig makes it easy to use floating baits while retaining its main advantages: discretion, rigidity (although less so in this version) and bait mobility.
