The different utensils that can be used to collect bait

To be able to collect your own bait requires specific tools to make the task easier. Weighing scales, landing nets, creels or pumps, many tools exist to collect different baits.

The landing net, a return to childhood

You want to go back to your childhood memories, go in search of bait with a landing net in hand. The landing net is a valuable tool for catching shrimp, small fish or crabs. The mesh size should match the size of the animals to be caught. If it is small, it can be used to find shrimp in crevices, day or night.

The scale, for shellfish

The scale is mainly used to trap shrimps or crabs. It is placed in a shallow area in calm seas. At the bottom of the scale a piece of fish, preferably fatty (sardine, mackerel), quickly attracts the different crustaceans present in the vicinity. It is necessary to raise it delicately, but with a rather dry blow to imprison its hosts.

The trap, for fishermen in a hurry

The various traps allow you to fill up on bait without too much effort and quite quickly. Crabs, shrimp, shellfish, fish or even cuttlefish and octopus can be trapped in the pots. Placing a bait at the bottom of the net increases the results and targets the prey you want to catch.

Be careful, there are different regulations concerning the deposit of creel depending on your fishing area. For more information, contact your local Maritime Affairs.

The worm pump, for worms, but not only

As its name indicates, the worm pump is used to collect the various worms buried in the sand or mud. But it is also indicated to collect the grey machottes or callianasses for example. Once the hole of the worm or the shellfish is located, the pump is placed on top and the intruder is sucked out.

And others

The list can be long and is far from exhaustive. Garden tools such as a spade, fork, shovel or rake are useful for prospecting sandy or muddy bottoms in search of occupants to use as bait.

Other tools, such as a bucket with a translucent bottom or a caulker scope, make it easier to find certain baits. All of these items are available in most fishing stores and do not require a large investment.
