Triple hooks, three points for one hook for various uses

Triple hooks are well known and are indispensable for many fishing operations. Know them and adapt them according to their qualities to ensure your catch.

Know them well

There is nothing more similar than a treble hook to another treble hook. And yet, there's something for every taste and need. From trout rigs with minnows to the largest baits for catfish and big sea fish, there are treble hooks that are effective for any fishery, provided you use the right model. The manufacturers offer a wide range of products. You will have to find the right model and use it wisely.

Almost all lures are rigged with triples. The metal lures, the swimming fish, some soft lures, not to mention the dead-handled mounts or others, they are so ubiquitous that we end up forgetting them.

The shapes, the sizes, the colors are different and pass almost unnoticed and yet great differences are to be taken into account for an optimal effectiveness. If our catches sometimes hold only to a thread, often we can say that they hold only to a triple.

The flexibility of steel

Choosing a small triple for a function, and apart from its ability to hold a grip, offers a fairly flexible armament in terms of the triple's limbs, this can come at a high price in terms of efficiency.

It is not uncommon to unhook a plug and when you look at the assembly, you don't notice any failure on it. However, this can be due to the flexibility of the metal. This is because it allows the plug to come off and then, once it is under more tension, the metal returns to its initial position and it is impossible to see and know what has really happened. The case can be repeated even more easily when this branch of the triple has softened. It is therefore necessary to watch your hooks and at the slightest doubt to change them for new ones.

The resistance of the branches

For the same size, there are hooks of different resistances that offer an interesting potential to present our rigs correctly.

Thus, for catfish fishing, sea fishing and bait fishing, especially for fishing with large fish, it is preferable to use strong iron triples as well as for extreme fishing. Models called Tropic exist and will ensure a resistance and a maintenance of the catches very adequate. It is very rare that a triple breaks, because the steels studied for this function are powerful. For freshwater fishing, it is possible to find bronze hooks that offer an excellent compromise between strength and discretion.

Color and size

It is possible to find triples of different shades. Blacks and tans are the best known, but also the most discreet. The red ones are often used to fish carnivores that target them to trigger their attacks. Finally, there are the white ones, the most widespread in the sea. They are also called nickel, and are the most used for our rigs and lure fishing.

It is with this in mind that we will choose our rigs while taking into account the differences between whites and tans, treble hooks adapted for saltwater or freshwater. Very often, they also differ according to the size of the lures, which is logical, but it should be known that it is possible to make a choice within a range of sizes.

Some fishermen will prefer the smaller ones and others the bigger ones. If you don't know, always prefer the larger size within reason, because it largely limits the loss of fish during the fight. It is therefore possible to find the right triple and thus correctly present a balanced set-up in terms of size between the bait and the tackle.

The right knots

While it is possible to simply tie a triple on a rig, it is important to keep the rig perfectly aligned with the leader to ensure a good presentation and to make the right hooks. A Palomar knot is best for large sizes that will be subjected to a very sustained intensity of pulls. For smaller versions, such as trout, a spoon knot is perfect, as it will keep the line in alignment regardless of the angle of pull.
