Fish for turbot with bait, bring the fish with attractive scents

The turbot is voracious. Sometimes it hunts whole fish, for example sand eels or herrings. But in other cases, it seeks small sandeels of about 10 cm or shellfish. In this case, bait fishing is more versatile.

Adapting to the food of the moment

The turbot is sometimes in feeding frenzy. That is to say that it feeds abundantly and is not very careful about the menu. But in some cases, especially when there is little current, it is very careful about the menu of the day. A fresh bait with strong scents is then more favourable.

The scent of natural bait

The scent of a piece of fish or shellfish offers important traceability. Turbot detect their scents from a distance and trace our fresh bait. We then offer a live or dead bait at the bottom. The live sandeel is the number one bait to seduce the turbot. It wriggles so seduces our fish hunter and player. Moreover, it is a delicacy for the turbot which feeds mainly on this fish. A piece of mackerel, horse mackerel, sardine or herring is also a good option to attract turbot.

The assemblies

To present a live fish, the line must be pressed as much as possible against the bottom. We use a slider which will keep our drag flush with the sand. A one meter drag in 0.35 mm is enough, it presents an upside down hook with an inward point in size 3/0 to 5/0.

  • Braid 0.16 mm then fluorocarbon 0.40 mm on which we put a slide or an olive
  • Leaders: 1 m of 0.35 mm nylon
  • Hook with large opening and reversed point n° 3/0 to 5/0

To present a section of bait, we use the same slide assembly or we weight it with a large olive or several olives. The hook is either a triple in size n°2 to 1/0, or a simple octopus type in size n°3/0 to 5/0.

  • Braided 0.16 mm then fluorocarbon 0.40 mm
  • Braid / fluorocarbon connection knot: "smooth" knot
  • Ballast: 1 or 2 olives, total weight 50 to 200 g
  • Leader : fluorocarbon 0.35 to 0.40 mm
  • Bait: mackerel strip
  • Round hook with wide opening of octopus type size n°3/0 to 5/0 or triple hook n°1 or 1/0

It is advisable to always hold the bottom well with a heavily weighted rig. Thus, in 20 m of water, it is not unwise to use a 50 to 200 g lead depending on the current. The faster the rig is fishing near the bottom, the better! At the slightest touch, it is advisable to give back a little bit of the hand before striking.
