Largemouth Bass
The species found in Quebec under the name Largemouth Bass is the same species found in France under the name Black Bass. In fact, the term Black-bass designates the species as a whole, which includes the different species of this family.
Habitat
The preferred habitats of the largemouth bass are shallow, vegetation-rich lakes. It is also present in certain rivers and in the St. Lawrence River, however, it does not appreciate areas subject to the current, so it is found sheltered from it, in channels, marinas and bays.
Distribution in Southern Quebec
The largemouth bass is found in the extreme south of Quebec, where the climate is suitable. The species is not native to Quebec, it was introduced there in the early 19 e century, and today, its population is good in the environments that are suitable for it. The most difficult thing is to find these environments, because only a few lakes and rivers are home to this species and it has not been stocked everywhere. Southern Ontario also has a good population.
Fishing from mid-June
This species is opened to fishing in mid-June, in order to ensure its protection during the reproduction period. It is a fairly easy species to catch, as it responds well to many lure fishing techniques. However, in order to catch the biggest fish, it is often necessary to perfect one's technique and know where to find them! It is certain that for a European wishing to travel to fish this species, Morocco, Spain or, even if it means crossing the Atlantic, the United States, will be destinations to be preferred.
