The Florida Red Fish, a sport fish that is long overdue!

The red fish, or red drum, is a nice fish, to my taste. It is very interesting to fish, especially for anglers who are passionate about sight fishing, because it offers a captivating and addictive search.

The Red Fish

The red fish is a little better known than the spotted sea trout on the other side of the Atlantic, probably due to several videos, often shared, of fly fishing in Louisiana where it is well represented. In its early years, the red fish frequents the same areas as the spotted sea trout, i.e. shallow areas, made up of shallows or mangroves. Later on, they tend to live offshore but at certain times of the year, the large subjects come closer to the coasts, as during the "mullet run". It is a fish that moves in schools, called "school", which can count hundreds or even thousands of individuals, which complicates the task to find them.

Indeed, if you don't find the school, you may not see any all day, except for a few solitary individuals. The most beautiful subjects can reach about fifty pounds, which makes it a beautiful sport fish very sought after in the Southeast of the United States and in the Gulf of Mexico, where it is found. In Florida, the Indian River is an area known to have a good population, as near the cities of Titusville and Fort Pierce. The best time to find them is from September to December.

Fishing

Looking for red fish requires a lot of observation and exploration to locate the schools of fish. Once they are spotted, the number of possible attempts to present a lure to them is small and it's best not to miss your chance. The schools are always on the move and the catching of one or two fish often makes them lose sight of, which means that you have to look for them again afterwards.

Concerning the redfish, the story is quite contradictory because it is a fish that reacts very well to topwater but because of the position of its mouth, it often misses its attack. To maximize its chances of success, it is better to use jerkbaits minnow, shrimp imitations or soft lures such as slug, shad or finess. Finally, the color Gold seems to stand out for this species and they have a real attraction for everything in this color (spoons, spinner paddles and minnow jerkbaits).
