Creating a surface lure and teaser rig for speckled bass

© Guillaume Fourrier

The speckled bass is an active carnivore in south-west France. It hunts in shoals and this rig allows you to target individuals of all sizes by playing on the competition for food: the big lure drives out the small one.

This rig is ideal for targeting speckled bass of all sizes. The large final lure will appeal to larger bass and the small teaser lure can whet the appetite of a speckled bass of any size.

Assembly

A fluorocarbon leader of 0.80 to 2 m in 0.35 to 0.50 mm is used before the lure. On this leader, we attach a teaser, i.e. a micro-lure (soft or feather), 15 cm before the final lure. The final lure is a 9 to 13 cm surface lure. The treble hooks on the surface lure should be sharp, so opt for top-of-the-range stainless steel.

Using the assembly

This surface lure is handled in a zigzag pattern. The lure is worked in a zigzag pattern, with regular strokes at a rate of 2 per second, moving from left to right in succession. Speckles attack both large and small lures.

The heavy equipment needed for this assembly

The 2.00 to 2.70 m rod should weigh between 5 and 50 g and have a tip action, not necessarily a fast one. In fact, a soft tip is ideal for surface fishing. Reels in sizes 2,500 to 4,000 (depending on brand) weigh 250 to 350 g and contain at least 150 m of 0.10 to 0.16 mm braid.

Tips for success

On a speckled bass hunt, you can replace the swimming fish with a shiny jig, while keeping the teaser.
