Trout fishing in mountain streams

In this summer period when the heat is important for our rivers and most of the fishes in the plain, it is time to go and look for the freshness in altitude. Fishing on mountain streams allows the encounter of magnificent salmonids in wild and still preserved territories.

Different techniques allow to take pleasure on these torrents: fishing with toc, fly, or ultra light in particular. In all cases, the fisherman will have to know how to adapt to a specific environment, and take all the necessary precautions during his trip in the mountains.

Specific conditions to be tamed

The fishing of the torrents is one of the most exciting which is. It is as much the walk in the mountains, the possible encounter with wild farios, as the always grandiose setting that makes this practice exciting. A sport fishing where you should not hesitate to take a little altitude by going up the torrents on several kilometers.

The discovery of these rivers offering small flows can be surprising. It is sometimes a fario of a good thirty centimeters which comes out of its hiding place in this river where the fisherman thought to cross only truitelles!

Approach strategies and maximum stealth will be the fisherman's main assets. More than on lowland rivers no doubt, fish seem to detect suspicious activity on the banks from very far awayâeuros¦

The different fishing techniques

The fishing with toc is still a queen technique on these grounds, efficient and simple to practice. As far as equipment is concerned, a telescopic rod with a small footprint, a 4-piece English rod or a rod with an internal thread are the main possibilities for the angler. A 14 or 16 hundredths nylon for the reel, a 12 hundredths nylon for the tip, a light weight and a line guide are enough to have fun on the water.

For the baits, red worms, moths or baits provided by the river are advised. In action of fishing, one will prospect the stream while going up, by proposing its bait with 2 or 3 times on the promising stations: near a hollow bank or having a hiding place, in the main stream of water, behind a stone where could hold a trout in ambushâeuros¦

The nymph toc is also effective on torrents, with small, lightly weighted imitations that allow you to explore the small currents offered by the river very effectively, even at altitude.

The dry fishing has also its followers on the torrents, with flies floating high on the currents, type tabanas, parachute, sedge in deer, double collarâeuros¦ For the choice of the whip, there are different schools: classic rods of 9 feet in silk of 4/5 make very well the business. Some fishermen prefer to opt for a 7 foot rod with a 3 line, to make fast and short casts. Other fly fishermen, on the contrary, choose the versatility of an 11 foot 3 line, which allows for example to alternate with nymph fishing on certain spots.

Each one will make his opinion at the edge of the water, according to his fishing habits and the conditions met on the torrents. The fishing can be practiced by going up the river, without insisting too much on each post, the trouts going up quickly take the imitation when they are in activity.

The ultra light fishing is another alternative. Small lures or spoons know how to decide the fish swimming in the currents, posted in edge or in the holes of water. Spoons of size 00 to 1, small swimming fish of 3 to 5 cm in trout and minnow colors, handled with light casts of less than 2 meters most of the time. The soft lures can also make the difference, for example at the foot of a waterfall or on deeper spots.

Minimal equipment

Whatever the fishing technique you choose, it is important to keep your equipment to a minimum, especially when a long approach trip is planned. Good walking shoes, a chest-pack or a small backpack to carry water, some supplies and an outfit to protect you from the cold or the rain are enough to have a good time at the water's edge.

Always remember to be well informed about the weather, the weather being changeable and surprising in altitude. The preparation can also require a careful study of the available maps: first to choose an interesting stream to fish, then to define more precisely the sector to explore.
