Know-how / Connecting 2 nylons: a simple knot to use with different diameters

© Thierry Cendrier

It's not always easy to tie two strands of nylon or fluorocarbon together discreetly and securely. Here's a series of knots you can use to tie a leader, a snatch for surfcasting or a rat tail for fly fishing. To get you started, here's the simplest knot.

This first knot for connecting 2 wires has the advantage of being quick and easy to make, and can be used in the case of wires of different diameters, which is not always easy...

To ensure that your knot is clean and perfectly made, make sure that the wires remain parallel and do not overlap during the knotting process.

Step 1:

Place the two wires to be joined head to tail parallel to each other and glue them together.

Step 2:

With the two wires joined (line body and leader), make a simple knot.

Step 3:

Repeat this operation 4 or 5 times, depending on the diameter of your wires, taking care to keep them parallel. They must not cross or overlap.

Step 4:

Moisten your knot and proceed to tighten it by pulling the two strands on either side of the knot. Proceed gradually, and don't hesitate to moisten again if necessary, to ensure that your knot slides perfectly.

Step 5:

Tighten your knot until the coils are tightly joined.

Step 6:

Trim off any excess and your knot is now complete.

Advantages :

  • Quick to make
  • Simple
  • Possible with different wire diameters

Disadvantages :

  • Not the strongest
  • Tightening can be a little tricky if the wires are stiff or do not slide easily
