Scratch fishing: the right blanks for this technique

© Thierry Cendrier

Equipment is a fundamental component of fishing, and using the right rod will help you fish better and therefore more... Let's take a look at what you need to fish effectively with a scraper.

What do you need?

We have seen that to be successful, scratch fishing required very precise animations in terms of amplitude and maximum feedback (contacts with the background and sometimes very discreet touches), as well as maximum reactivity to limit clashes and react quickly to information received.

The characteristics of the right tool

To meet these requirements, the rod you use must have the following characteristics:

  • Obviously, the right power! But it's better to use the lower end of the power range so that the tip flexes very little during animation. This allows you to gain in precision and react quickly after each contact with the bottom. In this way, you'll limit snags and produce animations with the amplitude and speed you want.
  • Resonance is very important for maximum feedback. In this case, a high-modulus carbon is more than appropriate.
  • A fast action see Xfast.
  • A length between 6.8 feet (2.03 m ) and 7.6 feet (2.28 m).

Which blank to mount?

For rodbuilding enthusiasts, Rainshadow often offers blanks that meet these specifications perfectly. But NFC, which often develops softer actions, is not to be outdone, offering a wider power range.

Phoenix, for their part, offer blanks that are often less expensive, fast and sonorous, and that enable effective scratch fishing.
