The common pike-perch (Pagrus pagrus) is a prized Mediterranean sparid fish, often solitary and powerful in battle. Measuring up to 80 cm and weighing up to 8 kg, it is an opportunistic carnivore that is a pleasure to seek out.
Rods adapted to this type of fishing
For vertical pike fishing, opt for casting or spinning rods from 1.80 to 2.40 mètres, with a power of 50 to 150 grams (ideal 50 to 100 grams for tenya or inchiku techniques). Soft models ensure precise contact with the bottom and cushion timid bites. Short lengths are preferable for effective vertical control during drifts.âeuros
A powerful reel
Choose casting models in sizes 5000-6000, with a minimum capacity of 150 to 200 metres of PE 1.0-1.5 (0.12-0.18 mm) braid. A progressive, well-adjusted drag is needed to pump paddles without unhooking them. Opt for reels with resonance and power if you want to reel in the biggest specimens.âeurosâeuros

The importance of line and leader
An 8-strand 30-40 lb braid (e.g. Daiwa Tournament) to fish plumb and detect the slightest touch. A marked braid every 10 meters allows you to control fishing depth with precision. A 37-50/100 (20-40 lb, 2-5 m) fluorocarbon shock leader, invisible and rock-resistant, is essential when targeting pike.âeurosâeuros
The main lures to use
- Tenya: 40-100 g, with live shrimp; filling 1 g/m water.
- Inchiku/Madai: 60-120 g, articulated, squid option for large paddles.
- Shads/slugs: tapered and supple on profiled heads 50-100 g.
- Kabura: Hinata Kab for strong currents, 60-80 g, vertically stable.

Are electronics indispensable?
Electronics (fishfinders) are often indispensable for locating the bottom and searching for paddles, especially on rocky spots. The use of an electric motor remains a plus, to control drifts correctly or to fish in current or windy conditions.
