Fishing big or very small can make all the difference
Even if at this time of year it is possible to do some great fishing using large flies, in particular imitating the terrestrials of the moment (grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, ...) that trout also wait for on the edges, the activity of aquatic insects is reduced to its maximum except at dusk and even then!
Early in the morning and in the evening, it is possible to have a few gobbles on very specific hatchlings, notably of Trichoptera, but also of mayflies such as our dear Ephemerella Ignita which can whet trout appetites. Cays also emerge at this time, and in some regions with cooler waters, hatchings can still occur even during the day, especially in fast-flowing waters.
But for the rest of the day, the trout are fairly inactive and waiting for "better days", even though they're always on the alert!

Use the same models but downsize
From summer to early September, imitations of small insects are recommended, apart from explosive grasshopper fishing, so get them out of your boxes.
Sedge, small CDC, hare's ears and micro palmer, but also small terrestrials (midges, chiros, ...) in sizes 18 to 22 are de rigueur. Once again, it's important to observe what's going on in the river and try not to overcomplicate things. If you use your favorite models, buy them or, better still, mount them in smaller sizes, you'll find that some fish are interested.
When it comes to small flies, you need to adapt your leader and tippet. Of course, a size 18 to 22 fly won't fish "big line", and 12° and 10° tippets are more suitable. Be careful, however, not to go too low in line diameter, especially if your fishing area has some fine fish, as fine trout may well take these "little shits"!

Pretty trout, wary of the end of the season
Yes, our trout have been fished for most of the season, and they're no longer fooled! They've seen it all, and by using these little flies you'll be in for a real surprise! Use strong iron hooks if you have good trout in your sectors, as the iron on these sizes is not thick on classic models.

Keep a close eye on the edges, counter-currents and slight acceleration of the current at the end of the flats, as small gobbles can betray the presence of beautiful fish, which at the end of the day come to oxygenate themselves and, at the same time, pick up even the smallest drifting insect!
Extend the tip and make nice relaxed poses to make sure there's no micro-drag, as on these small models they're not always easy to spot.
If a fish is active and won't take your fly, change imitations, but above all lean over the water to see what might be in the water film!
