What could be better than a session on the water to test a new rod, in this case a Kendoza spinning rod? This new series of rods was presented at the last Salon des Pêches in Nantes, on the very attractive Flashmer stand.

Cannes Kendoza

Under the Explorer Tackle brand, this series was born. The range offers a whole series of rods covering the essentials of sea, shore, boat and kayak fishing techniques.

In terms of build quality, here's what you get:

  • Blank carbon Toray Action extra fast / fast
  • Ultra-ergonomic reel seat
  • High-density EVA foam handle
  • Embossed bar symbol
  • Fuji® Fazlite® rings
  • Fuji® K-series anti-tangle armature
  • Finish CC âeuros corrosion Control
  • K-R Concept Fuji® mounting

A fine finish, then, for an affordable production rod.

Field testing

I received my Kendoza spinning 701 MH a few days ago, a 2.13 m rod in 10 X 40 grams power, the ideal length for me in a kayak. The right length for a rod dedicated to kayak fishing is to be able to pass the tip of the rod in front of the nose of the float, without lifting your butt off the seat. I put a Penn Battle IV reel in 2500, also new this year. The whole thing seems well-balanced. It comes in a pretty protective cover. But there's no substitute for the field. I'd been waiting for a weather window for quite some time.

The opportunity presented itself with a beautiful sunny day, without too much wind. I'm also taking advantage of this opportunity to continue with my swimming lessons my lures fitted with single hooks . We headed for the boat graveyard at the bottom of Brest harbor for a session of lure casting, on and below the surface, as well as jigs in the few hunts we encountered.

This rod is quite stiff and is at ease with swimming fish and jigs. It casts far and has plenty of reserve power. I'll try it out next time on an outrigger session. It's less at ease on small, light lures.

With its power of 10 X 40 grams, it will accompany my 7 X 28 grams which will be reserved for fine scratch fishing. On this session, it showed itself at ease with jigs from 20 to 40 grams, both casting on the hunt and jigging under the kayak. Tested also when trolling between two spots, you can feel the slightest touch in the arm holding the rod. When casting for swimming fish, distances are more than acceptable with lures like the 3 DB Jerkbait and its 15 grams. As mentioned above, it's less at ease with light lures like the 7.5-gram 3 DRX.

The rods in this range range from 2.13 m to 2.83 m in length, with maximum power ratings of 5 X 30 and 10 X 45 grams depending on the model. Prices range from 159 to 199 euros (recommended retail price).

My advice: ideal for sea bass and bonito hunting.
