What exactly is a capture window?
A catch window defines a minimum and maximum size of fish that anglers may keep, for example: only pike within this range may be kept, all others must be released immediately. For example, only pike measuring between 60 and 80 cm may be retained; those under 60 cm or over 80 cm must be released alive.

What are capture windows for?
The aim of this measure is to protect young pike (which have not yet had time to reproduce) and, above all, the largest individuals, which are the best breeders and ensure the longevity of the population. In fact, it promotes sustainable management: by keeping more large pike in the environment, we improve natural reproduction and increase the number of fish available to anglers.
The catch window also meets the expectations of sport anglers, who are increasingly looking to no-kill and catch trophy fish. The catch window thus serves to preserve the equilibrium of pike populations, guarantee the survival of the best spawners and enable reasoned harvesting, for more sustainable and attractive fishing.
The various advantages of the catch window for pike fishing
- Protecting the best breeding stock: by forcing the release of the largest pike, which are the best spawners, the catch window ensures the maintenance of a healthy population and the survival of the species.
- Stabilization and increase in large sizes : studies show that this measure encourages the presence of large pike in the environment, which is not the case with a simple minimum catch size, which often leads to their rarefaction.
- Increase in the number of potential outlets : released northern pike can be caught several times during the season, increasing angler satisfaction and the total number of catches without harming the population.
- Sustainable and balanced management : the catch window distributes fishing pressure on intermediate-sized individuals, which are more numerous and able to withstand the harvest, while preserving the young and large individuals essential for reproduction.
- Rapid, measurable effects: in sectors where this measure has been applied, we are rapidly seeing an increase in northern pike catches and improved population dynamics.
- Limiting evolutionary risks: by avoiding the systematic harvesting of fast-growing individuals (which become the largest), the capture window limits the negative effects on the population's genetic potential.
- Meeting anglers' expectations: it satisfies both anglers who want to catch fish and those who prefer catch-and-release and the search for fine specimens.

The catch window is a modern and effective measure for reconciling sustainable management, population conservation and fishing pleasure.
