Have social networks changed fishing and fishermen?

The advent of various social networks has somewhat altered anglers' behavior and sometimes even the practice of fishing. Has the old adage of hiding your spots and catches become totally obsolete?

The influence of social networks on fishing practices

For as long as human beings have been fishing, keeping fishing spots, fishing techniques and fish caught secret has been a way of life. To the question "are they biting?" Many fishermen used to answer in the negative, even if their catchbasket was full to overflowing. An old habit, no doubt linked to the fear of having what one considered to be one's fish, one's fishing spots, one's secrets, taken...

But today, no doubt under the influence of social networks, many anglers are showcasing their catches, their fishing techniques and sometimes even their spots. We're even witnessing a narcissistic escalation to "I'm the one with the biggest fish...". Whereas in the past, an exceptional catch was usually shared with family or friends over a meal, away from prying eyes, today thousands of followers know about it the instant the fish is out of the water.

No kill in force

The increase in no-kill fishing has undoubtedly brought about this change. Indeed, the satisfaction of the angler is simply complete from a shot that showcases both the fish and the angler! As a result, the younger generation is more inclined to share their catches and techniques, and to flood social networks with photos and videos. All the more so as the need to eat caught fish tends to diminish, and this generation doesn't appreciate the presence of bones on their plates... Fish no longer belong to the fisherman, they are now a link between fishing enthusiasts.

Sponsored fishermen

The arrival of sponsorship in recreational fishing has had the effect of considerably increasing this mode of communication and these changes in anglers' lives. Brands, and some anglers, have been able to take advantage of the advent of social networks to support their various interests. Fishing tackle is as much in the spotlight as the fish, the consumerist spirit has taken on a new role, and many anglers have embarked on a sometimes delirious fishing tackle race.

The fisherman no longer hides, on the contrary. He now knows how to showcase his passion. Perhaps the opportunity to demonstrate to the general public the importance of preserving aquatic environments and their living creatures.

The world is changing, and so is fishing, but however we express and share it, the main thing is always the pleasure of fishing.
