Return of session / Summer fishing in Brittany, mackerel and sea bass hunting in the parks

It seems that summer is finally making its way into the Breton landscape, so let's make the most of it! That's all it took to bring out the summer version of kayaking. Shorts, sunglasses, sun cream and cap. What's more, the fish had the same idea, with mackerel and sea bass on the program...

A few hours fishing

As it's the vacations, the house is invaded by offspring, but teenagers don't always get up early, so I thought a short session of a few hours might be in order. Launching the boat at daybreak, and with little time to spare, I stayed in the garden at the foot of the house.

The hunts are already set up and I spend a while working on them. As last time, the mackerel are numerous, and the big ones, always fun on fine line, are excellent fighters. On these hunts, small jigs are very effective, as they allow you to fish fast. As the water is a little murky, it rained heavily all day on Monday, and not just the famous Breton drizzle, so I got out the Crazee spintails again.

With their shiny palette, they imitate a small wounded fish to perfection, and are the size of the small sprats that are swarming the roadsides at the moment. Mingling with the mackerel, the horse mackerel have also returned, both the classic and yellowtail varieties, accompanied by teenage sea bass. Around 08:00, there are too many people around the hunts, lots of motorized vehicles passing in and out, too much noise for me, I'm going to play somewhere else.

Fishing in the parks

I decide to head back up to the beds, as the tide has turned and there should be enough water above the oyster tables. Half an hour later, I'm at work and indeed, there's a metre of water above the tables and I spot some activity. I rig a slightly stronger leader on my Penn Regiment, a topknot leader in 37/100. This park fishing, with little water above the tables, is done with a bit of force. The aim is to prevent the fish from hiding under the tables, which would then be a sure thing.

Here too, the prey are small, so I put on a small surface lure, a 3 DRX Pencil in 75 mm in blue color, good pick!!!! On the first cast, it's a pretty, powerful fish. Of course, it tries to get under the tables, at one point it almost does, I can feel the line rubbing on the edges of the tables. As you can see in the video below, the table is right under the kayak and the 37/100 makes for a powerful reaction. I manage to get it out, without the lure getting caught in the mesh of the oyster bags. Once on the surface, I just have to keep it there until I reach the landing net.

I'll make several powerful fish with a last one that will force me to change my strategy. I can feel that there's more power than on the last catches, so as soon as he's hooked, I bridle him hard and use the reverse gear to get off the top of the tables. The fight in open water, with no obstacles, is then easier and he too ends up on the landing net with a nice, strong, well-proportioned 63 cm bass. It's 10 o'clock and the activity is still there, but I have to take the troop to the beach this afternoon. Sometimes, the shortest sessions are the best, so thanks to summer for finally returning...
