A selection of 5 soft lures for bass fishing on the fly

To successfully fly-fish for sea bass, you need the right equipment and, above all, the right choice of lure. They must be designed to offer a minimum of water resistance and be able to glide from right to left without constraint. Here are 5 complementary models for this technique.

Fishing on the fly is based on short, dry strokes designed to move the lure erratically through the water.

Megabass X Layer

The X layer has been familiar to all bass anglers for almost 20 years. It's a slug-shaped lure, about ten centimetres long, without a caudal appendage, with one flat side and one domed side.

The strong points of this lure are obviously its ability to be jerked, but it stands out from the rest because of two features:

  • The presence of a rattle
  • It can be mounted face down for a faster descent, or face up for a more gliding effect.

Available in some twenty colors, there's something for everyone. Lunker City's Slug Go has exactly the same profile, but is quieter thanks to the absence of a rattle, and thus complements the X layer.

Fin's in Lunker City

The Fin's, as its name suggests, is a member of the "finness" family. It has the general appearance of a small fish with a horizontal V-shaped tail.

Compared to previous lures, it jerks just as easily, but measures 14 cm and has a much larger bite. Likewise, during animation, it displaces a much greater volume of water!

Berkley gulp minnow

The Gulp Minnow is also a lure from the finness family, but measures just 10 cm. Made from corn starch, it is particularly rigid, allowing it to react very easily to the angler's movements.

But its great strength lies in the fact that it is impregnated with an attractant that gives better quality bites when bass are fussy or prolongs pause phases, even on the bottom.

Crazy Eel 150 from Fiiish

The Crazy Eel is a lure that is particularly effective on the fly between two waters. With its original head, it doesn't jerk, but rather pulls very short and fast. It produces tight, fast vibrations and imitates to perfection the sandeel swimming action that bass are so fond of.

This year, a triangular-shaped "darter" head should enable side-to-side animation more common to fly-fishing.

The OSP Dolive stick

The last lure to complete my selection is OSP's Dolive Stick.

It's a pintail, i.e. a lure with a fine, pointed tail. The great strength of the Dolive Stick is that it is impregnated with salt, making it particularly dense.

As a result, you can cast it very lightly to explore shallow areas or to accentuate the gliding effect as the lure descends while maintaining excellent casting distances.

Le Dolive Stick est un leurre qui se lance très loin sans être nécessairement très plombé. cela permet de pêcher lentement et d'obtenir des phases de descente très planantes.

Darting lead heads

When fishing on the fly, the choice of lure is decisive for producing effective animations, but not only that... It's important to choose a jig head with a hydrodynamic profile that encourages your lure to swerve. For example, you'll want a pointed or triangular head with a flat face at the bottom to ensure lift and a gliding descent during pauses.
