Carangue ignobilis fishing on Reunion Island, what equipment should you choose?

The GT trevally is a pure sport fish of formidable power, so the equipment must be chosen accordingly. From the reel to the rod, from the line to the hooks, each point is important for success.

The cane

As these predators are capable of violent rushes, their only objective is to break you by rubbing against the bottom of a rock or reef! You'll need a powerful rod capable of stopping the GT from starting, with a minimum power of 80 lb and a minimum drag of 8 to 10 kg.

The reel

For jigging and live-fishing, a slow ratio is preferable to benefit from strong pulling power (approx. 1 metre per crank revolution). A 10,000 size may be limited in capacity at 80 lb, but its lightness makes it more pleasant to jig. The safest thing to do would be to opt for a larger size, such as a 20,000.
As for popper fishing, you'll need to opt for a fast ratio, even if this technique is a little less productive on Reunion Island given the few reefs surrounding it, it's perfectly possible to practice it from the shore or from a boat. In this case, 14,000 or 20,000 are the minimum sizes for 300 meters of 80 lb, but you can also spool your reel to 100 lb or more.

Wire and termination

As mentioned above, 80 lb is a minimum if you're looking for good-sized specimens. As these fish can exceed 60 kg, you should always opt for quality tackle. For vertical fishing (jigging, livebaits, even soft lures), a multicolored braid will give you a good indication of where the fish is in relation to the bottom, so you'll know if you need to restrain it more to avoid breaking on the bottom during the first rushes.
For connections, I recommend the FG knot, whatever the technique: it will pass smoothly through the rings and withstand extreme tension, provided it is well made.

For fluorocarbon termination, a "knot to tube" will fit any size of fluorocarbon or shockleader to connect a rolling or soldered ring.

Hooks

Bear in mind that the GT trevally can open or bend the toughest hooks on the market. Whether single or treble hooks, they must be ultra-strong and reinforced if you want to have a chance of admiring these super predators up close.

As you can see, stalking the Carangue Ignobilis requires a very specific choice of equipment and particular care when it comes to rigging. Don't skimp on quality and arm yourself with perseverance!
