Time and place to look for amberjack
Yellowtails (Seriola dumerili) usually approach the Mediterranean coasts from August to October. A period when they are often in a feeding frenzy, a good reason to look for them on surface lures. They are often found around marked thermoclines (15 to 40 mètres) or near deep bottoms or even shoals.âeuros
Whiting hunt mainly in schools, but you may also come across more solitary fish. They are sensitive to temperature changes visible on a depth sounder.âeuros
Surface lure animation techniques
To search for amberjacks on surface lures, you can use stickbaits Preferably "walking the dog": the lure zigzags sideways rapidly, then pauses for 2 to 3 seconds, before resuming more or less slowly. Attacks often occur during the pause or the restart. Alternate 2 to 3 strokes and pauses to try to trigger the following fish.âeuros
Visit poppers are surface lures that also attract amberjacks from a distance. In fact, they imitate fleeing prey. A word of advice: avoid striking immediately or on sight to avoid missing the attack.

The right equipment
A heavy casting rod (30 to 50 lb) is often required to cast large lures at the right distance. In addition, the use of fine braid and a long leader (5 to 6 m, 80-100 lb) are recommended to catch these wary fish discreetly.
The surface lures used to search for amberjack are mainly fine stickbaits and large poppers to select the most beautiful amberjacks (fish weighing 20 to 30 kg are possible).âeuros
In addition, the depth sounder remains an essential element for locating echoes and/or forage fish (mackerel, horse mackerel).âeuros

Fishing for amberjack with a surface lure is a great challenge that will bring you great emotions. Of course, long hours of prospecting are sometimes necessary to reach the goal, especially when fishing this way.
Amberjacks are hardy fish, but it's best to release them quickly so you can dream again of those spectacular, explosive attacks.
