Float fishing, why put sinkers on the banner?

When you fish with a float for white fish in water, placing weights on the banner is sometimes essential. It allows to have a banner always tended and so to miss much less touches.

A custom banner

The banner weights allow to perfectly immobilize the float, but also the bait. When you are fishing in the water, it is very important to have a stable banner, otherwise you will have much less hits. Every time I fish like this, and when there is wind, I don't hesitate for a second, I put one or more sinkers on my banner.

My banner is short and measures in general 30 cm and I put then two leads n°9, one 10 cm above the float and the other still 10 cm above. Then, it is necessary to maintain the tip well in plumb with the float and the weights above the surface. Thus, the banner will not be subjected to the harmful effects of the wind and will not risk to swing. You'll be able to see every little touch and your strike will be that much more effective. To do this, simply lift the rod to bite the fish and you will have very few misses.

Of course, if the wind is very strong, a slightly longer banner and a different type of mounting should be used. So, I opt for a 50 cm banner on which I place the leads in a slightly different way. A about 12 cm, I place a group of 3 leads n°9 and I control this mass by maintaining it at the level of the surface just beside and very slightly above the float.

With such an arrangement, even if the wind is very strong and my rod is not perfectly still, the float will remain stable. And since the sinkers are only a dozen centimeters from the float, the strike will remain very effective.

In waters where the fish are trained, they cause very small bites which result in a simple shake of the antenna. This is why it is important to keep the leader taut and under control.

Baiting, baits and floats

The baiting will be done with the mini cup in all the cases, with micro-pellets. The mini cup allows a very precise baiting and the micro-pellets to target our bottom fish. With your float placed on it will allow to trap our partners of game.

For the baits, no complications, I use only one. A simple soft pellet on the hook will make the plaice, bream, carp, carp and tench succumb.

When it is windy, or even in windless conditions, you must choose your board with great care. It must have a fairly stocky body. With its metal keel, it must remain stable even in the presence of waves or surface current. Its weight will depend on the depth and the wind strength.

In many cases, it is important to use sinkers on the banner. It is a way to have a correct line presentation, therefore, to have more hits and more fish in the pot at the end of the day.
