What is feeder fishing?
Feeder fishing uses a device called a "feeder" to attract fish to the hook. The feeder is a basket or cage filled with bait that slowly dissolves in the water, creating a cloud of attractive scent around the hook.
What you need
A rod specially designed for feeder fishing, usually 9 to 11 feet long, with a soft tip action to detect subtle bites is used for feeder fishing.
A small spinning reel is ideal for feeder fishing, as it allows precise casting and good line control.
A monofilament or braided main line, generally 6 to 8 lbs in strength. A thinner leader, often in fluorocarbon, is used for greater discretion.

There are different types of feeder, including open feeders, closed feeders and spring-loaded feeders. Open feeders are ideal for beginners, as they are easy to fill and use.
Baits most commonly used in feeders include maggots, mealworms, pellets and sweetcorn. For the hook, baits such as worms, grubs or pieces of pellet can be used.
Basic assemblies
Inline assembly : the feeder is attached directly to the main line, with a short leader (approx. 4 to 6 inches) attached to the feeder. This set-up is simple and effective for beginners.
Loop assembly : an assembly where the feeder is attached to a loop on the main line, allowing feeders to be changed quickly.
Fishing techniques
Throw the feeder into the target area. The rod should be held in such a way that the tip is slightly bent, which helps to detect bites. Bites can be subtle, often indicated by a slight wobble or bend in the rod tip. Be patient and attentive.
Once a bite has been detected, gently lift the rod to set the hook in the fish's mouth.

Tips for beginners
- Choice of Spot : look for areas with underwater structures, such as seagrass beds, rocks or the edges of water lily beds.
- Patience: feeder fishing requires patience. Sometimes you have to wait for the fish to be attracted to the bait before you start biting.
- Experimentation : try different types of baits and feeders to see what works best in your fishing area.
This makes feeder fishing an accessible and effective method for beginners. With the right equipment and a little practice, you can quickly start catching fish and enjoying this fishing technique to the full.
