The shadow
Luminosity, especially when fishing for pike-perch, is an important parameter. But beyond this species, low light levels make fish feel safer and encourage predators to hunt. The shade offered by barges makes them an excellent holding area for many species.
Food intake
Barges are also excellent spots, as they act as fish aggregating devices. In fact, the hull and its anchor are home to a large number of algae that form the first link in a local food chain. In this way, they provide food and shelter for both fry and predators.
An area of clutter
The anchor, and in particular the chain linking it to the barge, often holds back a certain amount of drifting debris. Very quickly, an accumulation of branches and detritus forms at the head of the boat, creating a prolific holding area for many species. This makes fishing sometimes complicated and costly in lures, but very often productive.
Temperature delta
In winter, inhabited houseboats raise the water temperature in a nearby area. Fish, in search of thermal comfort, will quickly take up residence here.
Conversely, in summer, shaded areas are often slightly cooler than exposed ones, and once again, in the midst of hot, sunny days, it's a safe bet that you'll find the coveted fish in the shade of the barges.
Surface current deviations
On the surface, all obstacles, including barges, channel and deflect the current. At the same time, they create feeding veins where fish will find a maximum of food as they drift. You'll often find that chub know exactly where to position themselves and how to take advantage of barges to feed easily on the surface. It's up to you to take advantage!
Sediment agitation
Finally, when barges are sailing, they often lift sediment and create water movements. While they don't constitute a spot since they're in motion, their passage does constitute a moment when bites are often more numerous. So be ready and concentrated during your outing to make the most of these moments.
