Simple and solid equipment and leaders for ray fishing

The material and the leader are important. There are a multitude of rigs for striper fishing. Here's how to make a special striper rig that has proven itself time and time again.

A simple and solid assembly

This rig is perfect for deep fishing for beautiful fish and its drag that makes the bait rest directly on the bottom is ideal for curly skate. It is very solid since it is composed of a 60 to 65/100 nylon leader on which a 55 to 60/100 fluorocarbon stack and drag are placed.

The glued tube beads contribute to the high strength of this assembly. Indeed, compared to knots constituting points of weakness, you are assured of having 100% of the linear resistance of your line. These high diameters, associated with the glued beads will be a definite asset for fishing beautiful rays, because they oppose an enormous resistance to the recovery in the water with their broad body.

Adapted hooks

Octopus hooks in sizes 2/0 to 4/0 will be perfect to accommodate nice bites (cephalopod strips). I recommend round hooks with paddle in the same sizes to bait worms with a needle (b ibis , r ags the advantage of the high stack will be to interest other species feeding above the bottom, making this rig very versatile in terms of catches. Escherch the baits correctly, with elastic thread, if necessary, on the octopus hooks. The latter will be mounted on 60 cent wire.

Braid or nylon

In boat, fishing as deep (up to 100 m or 200 m), the use of braid is essential. I advise you to use modern 8 strand braids which offer an impressive diameter/resistance ratio. Thanks to their fineness, they will allow you to fish very fine and thus to better split the currents. You will stay more easily in the vertical with a lighter weight.

With almost no elasticity, a braid will allow you to feel perfectly the hits, even at long distances. A 5 to 7 m fluorocarbon leader inserted before your rig will give you more discretion and you will benefit from a greater resistance to abrasion against rocks during the fight.

In surfcasting or on shallow fishing areas (less than at 50 m), a nylon on the drum of your reel will do the job very well.

Mounting for fishing rays

This rig is designed with tube beads glued with a special fishing glue that does not weaken the nylon and is used to hold the clip-on beads in place on the leader.

The clip-on beads are in fact oval beads, phosphorescent or not, with holes in both directions. They ensure a perfect multidirectional rotation of the stacks.

The high stack and the drag are spaced 120 cm apart in order to avoid entanglements in fishing action in the currents.

Octopus hooks are relatively large, 2/0 to 4/0, because the target fish have a large mouth.

A little more to perfect the set up and attract a maximum of fish, place a colored and phosphorescent lead to attract fish to the baits over long distances.

Prefer tube beads for mounting

These tube beads can be found in any hobby store and are initially used to make necklaces. They are particularly economical, because they are sold by weight in bags or tubes. It is thus possible to have hundreds of beads for a very small amount of money.

I highly recommend the glass models which are more robust and above all stick better to the nylon. To be sure, just tap with your fingernail to hear the characteristic crystalline sound of glass or heat one end with a lighter.

It will also be advisable to take tube beads with a hole corresponding to the diameter of the nylon used so that they are sufficiently adjusted to hold well once glued. Indeed, beads with holes that are too large cannot be glued effectively. Having a small piece of nylon on you will be enough to make sure when you buy the beads.

It is important to use a special fishing glue so that it does not weaken your rig. The leader is made of nylon, because the glued beads hold much better on this material. Indeed, fluorocarbon is waterproof and does not soak up glue. This means that the beads hold much less well. With nylon, the beads hold perfectly and can withstand considerable pressure.

To ensure that the stack or straggler is held securely in the bead clipot you just have to make a double knot at the end. By coming to rest against the hole of the bead, it blocks the stack very effectively.

In order to prevent this knot from being damaged in combat and thus weakened, it is highly recommended to insert a small round bead between the knot and the bead clipot . It will also act as a ball bearing and will greatly improve the smoothness of rotation of the stack, thus limiting the risk of twisting.
