The fishing kayak is a bit of a Swiss Army knife, of course different techniques are possible aboard this boat, but it can also take you to a fishing spot inaccessible from the shore.

Fishing in summer

In summer, a weekend with tidal coefficients of 103 can not leave indifferent. If the summer, the collection of many species is prohibited, such as shells or abalone for example, there are still some interesting species to collect. You also have to be careful about where filter-feeding shellfish such as clams or razor clams are collected. Many places are limited in terms of health. The summer overpopulation is a major reason for this, find out more by reading the prefectural decrees that can be found on the net or at the town hall.

In this month of August, we decided to go and collect crabs, the pretty crab cakes are quite numerous on some spots. Be careful with the regulatory mesh size, for this species north of the 48th parallel, the mesh size is 14 cm of carapace width, don't forget your tide gauge.

Before going ashore, or rather on the rock, we took the opportunity to do some lure fishing, bass and garfish were present. The day looks beautiful, in fact, it will be the second hottest day of the summer for the tip of Brittany with 37 °C in Brest.

The harvest can begin

We disembarked on an island uncovered by the river 1 hour and a half before low tide. The equipment is very simple, a bag, a hook, a pair of gloves. Once the kayaks are put down and to wait for it to go down even more, we pick up a few big clams and some clams. Shells which will be consumed in the aperitif with a vinegar with shallot and a slice of salted butter, it is divineâeuros¦

The foreshore being quite uncovered, we went in search of our big claws, it did not take long to find them, they were not hidden in the rocks. As they are also hot, they put themselves in the veins of sand, half sanded, in the corridors of currents. On these places, there is always water flowing, in one direction or the other, with the tide, bringing a little freshness to the crustaceans.

The crabs are next to each other, just bend down and pick them up, being careful not to leave a finger in them. Ãa pinches very hard a big crabâeuros¦

We make thus very quickly our fishing in pretty crabs, individuals very largely above the regulation mesh, the mayonnaise will be of exit this evening. What a good moment to wade in these veins of current by scorching heat.

The time to leave

There is a rule that you must follow: the end of the fishing corresponds to the tipping of the flow. On some places, the sea rises very quickly, so be careful, especially if we are on foot, in a kayak we have an additional margin. So we take advantage of the last moments, before the tide changes, to have a snack.

Here is one more pleasant use of the fishing kayaks. A very nice moment that we will continue to share with the family around the table to taste these excellent shellfish with big claws.
