Return of session / First sea bass outing on the north Brittany coast in a kayak, wind and fish on the menu

Since April 1, sea bass fishing has once again been authorized. Weather conditions being acceptable, this was all it took to open the 2025 season on this fish.

The right conditions

Conditions on the north coast are decent for a first. Admittedly, some wind is forecast for around 1:00 pm, after the tide has turned, but it should leave us alone until then.

As a reminder, the 2025 regulations have kept this border of the 48th. To the north, 2 specimens may be taken, from April 01, at 42 cm mesh with caudal marking for kept fish, no kill authorized on this species. South of the 48th, 1 fish may be caught per day all year round.

Fishing on park edges

This outing will be with one of my regular fishing colleagues, as he's getting his feet wet again, and an accompanied outing is safer at the start of the season, especially on this stretch of coast. In general, we come to this spot for the location. As this fish is closed to recreational fishing until May 01, even in no-kill mode, we might as well leave them alone. For this outing, we'll stay out of the onshore winds by working the park edges. The wind isn't too strong and the sky is clear. Let's head for the parks.

As soon as we hit the water, my colleague taps a small sea bass and a garfish, which is encouraging. After two hours of searching and trying different techniques, it's not very fruitful. Antho catches a second one only slightly bigger than the first, and I catch one in the 40 cm range. We decide to turn back and look for them in the channel in 15 m of water. A few bites on the soft lures, probably little old ones, but nothing concrete. We're nearing the end of the run on this low coefficient of 42 and there aren't many current veins to exploit.

Lure of the day

Around 11:00, Antho has to turn back, as he has other commitments. I decide to continue around the pebbles at the entrance to Abers, as the tide is about to turn and I'm sure I'll find a few veins to exploit. Good pick, they're there, in 5/6 meters of water, I'll do 5 in a row and it'll stop. The lure of the day, as is often the case on this spot, is YoZuri's 3DB Jerkbait in gold black. The area is full of them and the bass love to feed on them.

I'm happy, I've validated my first bar outing. I'll take a small 50 that will be Ikéjimé right away. I show you how it's done in the attached video. The method may seem barbaric, but it's the one that causes the least pain to the catch. As soon as you pierce it, it's brain-dead and no more information comes through. All that's left to do is bleed it, and the meat is much better on the plate. I also do this on pollack, but you have to prick a little further back than on sea bass to pierce the skull. Once you've mastered this technique, it's easy to do, even on a kayak.

12:15, it's time to head back and the wind, with the tilt, as forecast, is starting to pick up too and I'm starting to get hungry, I've got an Italian salad waiting for me in the snack bag. I've got an Italian salad waiting for me in the snack bag. A good start to the 2025 season.
