Fishing for pollock, aiming for the biggest ones while fishing lighter

Here is a yellow place of one meter © Guillaume Fourrier

The pollack is a marine carnivore that could exceed the 10 kg mark. But surprisingly, I look for it more and more in ultra-light fishing with regard to its size. Clearly, in light fishing, the sensations are guaranteed.

The pollack is a noble fish with a yellowish coat. Its scientific name is Pollachius pollachius . It is distinguished from the saithe by the presence of a dark lateral line on its light coat. Its hue is light brown on the back and whitish on the belly, with a gradient of yellow on the sides.

A large specimen that can exceed one meter for 10 kg

A beautiful fish when it comes to the surface on a calm sea and sunny weather. It is a nice line shot, the pollack can reach 1 m. I was lucky enough to catch a French record pollack on 16 lb line, weighing 9.8 kg. In 2019, I caught a one meter specimen, but too skinny to claim a new record. As opposed to the size of these big fish, I like to track this gadid in light fishing.

Thrills in light fishing

Light elevator fishing is the technique that interests me the most. Elevator fishing allows you to get hits far from the wreck, often between the first third and half of the depth. That's why I use more and more a small light rod to have fun. A set of 2.10 to 2.20 m, in weight 5-20 g, equipped with a reel in size 2500 and a braid in 0.10 mm. The 4 m fluorocarbon is in 0.30 mm. I have mechanically more hits than my friends, and I don't break much, the fish being caught far from the wreck or the rock. On the other hand, as soon as I feel the bottom once, I reel immediately and do not try to scrape the structures and rocks. It would be a waste of time if a big guy came to bite on the bottom. Thus, the brake sings and the fights are fantastic!
