Over the last twenty years or so, bass fishing has become more focused on soft lures and deep waters. The democratization of soft lures is at the root of this change, but many anglers still enjoy (and return to) stalking them with hard lures. More than just an option, swimming fish often represent a solution!

2 ways to catch bass
Lure fishing is based on two concepts that can be exploited at different times. To seduce bass, you can bet on their feeding reflex to succumb to a lure and animation, but you can also play on an aggressive reflex to trigger attacks. It's often with this objective in mind that I successfully use swimming fish.

Very fast animation on the reel
Indeed, when I fish with swimmer fish I like to use very fast reel animations. When I say very fast, don't hesitate to reel very fast! You can add a few twitches, speed changes or micro-pauses, but a linear retrieve is often enough... Provided you're very aggressive!

Attacking them
The aim of this animation is to provoke and annoy them, forcing them to react. The idea is to produce very strong vibrations thanks to a very fast retrieve, but also to produce noise by choosing bead decoys (low tones work particularly well...) and possibly colors that are a little flashy!

Don't give them time to think
The other aim of this type of animation is to surprise the bass, giving them no time to analyze the situation and sniff out the trap. When sea bass recognize the presence of prey nearby, their decision must be instantaneous, otherwise the prey will escape them. By proposing this type of animation, particularly on inactive fish, we try to trigger a reflex attack from the most opportunistic fish in the area. The hits are often violent!

2 typical situations
This animation is particularly suited to two contexts. The first is during periods of intense feeding activity, when sea bass are on the hunt or even in a feeding frenzy. If the sea bass doesn't attack the prey first, it will be captured by someone else and lost.
The other situation where it's interesting to animate your swimming fish in this way is when the bass are totally apathetic or when there's a lot of fishing pressure. At this point, you no longer play on the aggressive reflex, you create it!

Allows you to prospect a lot of ground very quickly
Finally, the last advantage of fast retrieves is that they allow you to prospect a lot of ground, and therefore to locate the outfit and active fish quickly over large areas and to solicit a greater number of fish, active or not!
