Long or short fins for float-tube fishing?

Fins are the key piece that will allow the float-tube fisherman, who does not use an electric motor, to propel and steer himself. Their choice should not be neglected, especially as the differences in performance are very great depending on the model.

There are two lengths of fins, the short ones which are often proposed for the practice of float-tube and the long ones which are rather used for scuba diving. This length has a real influence on their performance, handling and comfort of use.

Performance

The performance level of short flippers is low due to their short length and to compensate, the fisher must increase the beat frequency. Trips on rivers or large lakes with the slightest wind quickly become complicated, so these are fins to be reserved preferably for calm places with restricted movement.

Long fins are effective from the slightest stroke and give much more power than short fins. They require a little more physical effort, but that's nothing compared to the gains they bring, especially if you're looking for speed and ease of movement.

Manoeuvrability

Maneuverability and accessibility to congested areas remain similar between short and long flippers and with the latter there is no apprehension to be had. Indeed, when you need to swim in very little water, the flexibility of long fins and their size allow you to propel yourself with a minimum of flapping just below the surface of the water.

Physical effort

At the same beating frequency, long fins give more power but this implies a higher physical effort which, during long days, can be felt depending on your physical condition.

Security

If you are surprised by a current or have to avoid an emergency obstacle (boat, tree...), the long fins will make your task easier thanks to their performance. Same if a storm surprises you and you want to return home quickly. In short, risk situations are numerous and to face them, it is better to have fins that allow you to get out of this situation as quickly as possible.

In conclusion

The short fins are not completely to be neglected for their comfort in particular, but from a performance point of view, the long fins have a very clear advantage. After years of practice of Float-tube, having tried several types of fins and exchanged with other fans of the practice, we all come to the same conclusion: long fins are preferred for use in float-tube.
