Tips to fish effectively for whiting in surfcasting in winter

While most of the fishes go back to the open sea once the winter is well established, one species joins the coasts exclusively for this period: the whiting. A species that we can then target by surfcasting.

A fishery that can be very fruitful

Whiting is a schooling fish. So when you find the right option to catch one, you have a great chance of catching more in the process, especially on the same set-up. Indeed, doubles and triples are very common when looking for crappie. It is therefore better to put all the chances on your side and fish with 3 hooks mounted on the leader.

If the fishing is indeed successful, try to identify the optimum fishing time for your leader - in other words, the time it takes for three crappie to take the bait. First, let your rig fish for 10 to 15 minutes. If, when you reel in, you have a triplet of crappie, then let it fish for 2 minutes less on the next cast and if it's a full house again, optimize your fishing by reeling in even sooner on the next cast!

Focus on phosphorescence

Whiting are particularly active at night so don't skimp on glow-in-the-dark accessories especially for your soft or hard sinkers and pearls (on the line body or on the stacks, just before the hook).

To boost the phosphorescence, you can flash the accessories with a pocket UV lamp. The ultraviolet light of these lamps allows to charge quickly and durably the phosphorescent surfaces. To flash your bead, place it in your hand and put the lamp on it before flashing the light on all surfaces. These luminous effects are a real attractant which will not fail to give desire to the crappie!

Bait for whiting fishing

The whiting is a voracious fish and generally has eyes bigger than its belly. They will be tempted by a large number of baits, including areca or mackerel. There is no need to be too fussy about bait presentation: cut a piece of areca or mackerel the size of your little finger and tie your bait onto the hook in a coil.

The leader for whiting fishing

A leader with 3 stacks of 70 cm is ideal. Whiting being an unsuspecting fish, it is not useful to fish very fine. Moreover, if you chain the catches, the nylon tends to twist. To avoid this problem, I use thick nylon without memory such as amnesia. Whiting is a fish that evolves between the middle and the bottom of the sea, so it is better to fish with a tramp.
