Located upstream of the Narrows, the Brest roadstead offers a playground of some 180 square kilometers. This area is a concentrate of civilian and military nautical activities. It's a fabulous playground for water sports enthusiasts, sailors and motorboaters, as well as for shore fishermen, kayakers and boaters.
A great area for kayak fishing
With a very indented coastline, numerous peninsulas are within easy reach, offering many popular fishing spots.
The Port du Moulin Blanc in Brest is one of the main departure points for activities in the harbor. You'll find all the services you need, a beautiful slipway and plenty of parking.
The Brest roadstead is an area I'm particularly fond of for fishing. Well sheltered, it's a place of refuge when weather conditions don't allow me to go out on the open sea.
This configuration makes kayak fishing much easier. The shallow banks are often home to pretty bass that are impossible to catch from a motorboat.
In fact, you'll come across a good number of kayaks in the harbor. Light tackle is recommended. A 5-15 g rod that can handle small soft lures is ideal for this type of fishing.
Shore anglers are not to be pitied either. The bravest of them won't hesitate to clamber through the ferns to reach the most remote spots, which are often rich in fish.
In fine weather, you'll improve your chances by going early in the morning and late at night.
Between sea bass, sparidae,missole...
The diversity of species attracts many recreational anglers. It's possible to catch not only sea bass, but also numerous sparids such as gilthead bream, gilthead bream and pike-perch, which in recent years have colonized the shallow shelves of the harbor.
Sparid fishing is mainly done with bait, baited on a madai or tenya, exploring the current zones along the drop-offs at the exit of the roadstead towards the narrows.
Head upstream to the brackish areas created by the Elorn and Aulne rivers, where you can fish formissole.
This little shark, totally harmless and easily recognizable, is fun to fish and offers quite violent fights, especially on light tackle. It is best fished from a boat or kayak.
... and Rockfishing
There are numerous harbor facilities in the harbor. Rockfishing spots abound, notably in the riprap along the breakwaters.
This playful technique is an excellent way for children to learn. It doesn't require much equipment, and there are often plenty of touches, with the occasional surprise.
