Most candidates prepare for this test through a boating school, with about 10 to 20 hours of instruction spread over several evenings or days, but it?s still possible to take the test independently using textbooks, maps, and practice exercises. Once you?ve submitted your application (coastal license, form, revenue stamp, and photo if required) and passed the exam, the extension simply adds to your existing license. You may then legally sail without any distance limit from a shelter using a motorboat, whether at sea, on large lakes, or on enclosed bodies of water.
