A fly-tying contest for a good cause
In the wake of the devastating fires of the summer of 2026, members of the Freshwater Anglers Club, chaired by Vincent Petit, wanted to rally enthusiasts around a unique initiative. Named "The Fly That Sows" , this national competition aims to channel the expertise of artificial fly tiers into concrete action for reforestation.
The concept is simple: to allow anglers from all over France to participate from home, regardless of their skill level. Beginners and experienced fly tiers alike will be able to put their creativity and technical skills to the test while contributing to an environmental cause.
Three artificial flies to determine the winner among the participants
The contest involves creating three models:
- A required dry fly: The CDC Emergent, inspired by Marc Petitjean's fly patterns, on a size 16 hook.
- A forced nymph: Frank Sawyer's famous Pheasant Tail, tied on a size 14 hook.
- A free fly: on the theme ?Your Low-Water Fly,? giving participants room to be creative.
To encourage beginners, it will also be possible to enter a single fly and compete for a place in the corresponding category.
The entries will be photographed, anonymized, and then evaluated by a jury of experts. Each fly will be scored out of 25 points, for a total of 75 points toward the overall ranking.

A prestigious panel of judges and numerous partners
For this first edition, the organizers brought together 17 well-known figures from the world of fly fishing , including Marc Delacoste, Laurent Jauffret, Jean-Paul Dessaigne, Pierre Kuntz, Julien Daguillanes, Emma Alain, and Chloë and Julie Quillard.
Several major brands and players in the fishing industry are also supporting the event, including JMC, Devaux, Orvis, Vision, Tiemco, Flyscene, Villermet, Laurent Jauffret, and Expériences Voyages .
The top 50 finishers in the overall standings will receive a prize. Awards will also be given to participants under 18, the top female participants, and the best video entries in each category.
Ten euros per registration for French forests
Beyond the competition, the goal is, above all, one of solidarity. On the A ?15 contribution, of which ?10 will go to the ONF-Agir pour la forêt endowment fund , which supports, among other things, the restoration of forest areas affected by fires, the regeneration of forest stands, and the preservation of biodiversity.
An original way to remind us that fly fishing remains closely tied to the quality of natural habitats.
