An official referee in a recreational fishing competition is the person authorized by a federation or organizer to enforce the rules, check participants (licenses, equipment, zones), supervise weighing and classification, settle disputes and guarantee the safety and ethics of the event. An official referee can also perform the duties of a steward (field controls, start/finish, compliance with quotas and methods) and must be recognized by the federal structure to sign the official results.

How to become an official referee (in practical steps)
- Be licensed and familiar : in general, you need to be a member of the relevant federation (practitioner/competitor) and be familiar with the national and discipline-specific regulations.
- Theoretical training : federations offer modules/initiations (MCQs, theory sessions) on rules, control procedures, weighing and safety; validation often involves a written exam or MCQ.
- Putting it into practice : training includes practical experience in competition under the supervision of a referee trainer (immersion, tutor, assessment tests) to validate skills in the field.
- Validate modules and obtain qualification: depending on the federation, you go from trainee steward to steward to referee by validating the required modules (control, start, course, weighing, etc.).
- Accumulate experience and aim for the next level: to referee national or international events, experience, seniority, fluency in English (for international events) and approval from the national commission are often required.
- Practical conditions and local rules : depending on the federation, there may be age or first-aid requirements (life-saving awareness/PSC1).

A few practical tips for success
Read and master the national rules and standard event regulations (weighing, penalties). A good technical knowledge avoids disputes.
Apply to be a trainee steward and ask to accompany a referee trainer on several events to learn the routines (weighing, minute writing). This kind of immersion is a standard part of our training courses.
Formalize your application with the regional or federal refereeing commission and attend the sessions proposed by your departmental committee or league.
