The chub is one of the classic targets for bread fishing, especially when fishing on the surface with a floating piece of bread or a small crouton. Carp also respond very well, especially when bread is used as bait or for light, regular groundbaiting.
The roach is another common target for this bait, especially when the fish are near the shore or in calm areas. The crucian carp often rounds out this winning quartet, as it readily feeds on plant-based or bread-based baits.

For surface fishing, a floating crouton is still a sure bet because it mimics a natural, visible bite. For more wary fish, a small piece of bread crumb wrapped around a fine hook often results in better hook sets.
Baiting plays an important role, since bread rarely works on its own on a virgin spot. A simple strategy is to create a lure zone with a few crumbs, then follow up with discreet, regular feeding.
Bread still holds an important place in freshwater fishing because it represents a popular, accessible, and versatile technique. Behind its simplicity, it reveals above all the feeding behavior of whitefish, which are capable of switching from natural food to bait costing just a few cents as soon as a spot seems safe to them.
In short, if we were to name the most reliable species, we would have to mention roach, chub, carp, and crucian carp first and foremost. Alongside these, other whitefish may take the bait, but it is indeed these four that form the core of freshwater bread fishing.
