The most effective baits
- Bibi: excellent on sea bream, but also very good on sars and marbled bream, especially in spring.
- Pink nereids and bloodworms: very popular with sparids, with good holding power and high attractiveness.
- Fresh shrimp: very versatile, effective on bream, pike-perch and other sparids.
- Mussels, cockles, clams: particularly useful for dorados, especially when they hunt on rocky bottoms or near shellfish beds.
- Small green crab: excellent bait for beautiful gilthead bream.
- Cuttlefish and squid: in strips or small pieces, very effective on gilthead bream and sometimes paddlefish.

Choice by species
For sea bream, opt for shellfish, shrimps, bibis and small crabs. For sars, bibis, various worms and small pieces of shellfish work well. For pager, nice-sized shrimps and small squid are often formidable.
In practice, the fresher, plumper and better presented the bait, the more bites it will trigger, especially as the water begins to warm up.
The assemblies to use
From shore, prefer a sliding rig or float fishing if you're fishing dykes and rocky edges. From a boat, a support rig or a presentation very close to the bottom is often the most profitable in spring. In crowded areas, a sturdier rig with less risk of snagging is preferable.

A few useful tips
Keep baits cool, alive if possible, and avoid baits that disintegrate quickly on the hook. In spring, sparids can be selective: a well-presented bait is often better than a large, badly assembled one.
If you're fishing from shore, bibi and shrimp are great starting points. From a boat or with a back-up, fleshy worms and shellfish work very well on rocky spots and breaks.
