A selection of flies for winter reservoir fishing

I present 5 flies for reservoir fishing this winter. Flies that can be used all season long, but which are often very effective at this time of year for winter fishing. Happy tying!

1- Pink blob

The blob has quickly become a must-have fly for reservoirs. This egg-shaped fly mounted in a special blob caterpillar, dense and short, is unrivalled for exciting trout. It's a must-have in your reservoir fly boxes, in a variety of sizes and colors.

Pink is often one of the basic colors for winter fishing, as it excels in the clear, cold waters encountered at this time of year.

The pink blob is sure to catch trout in reservoirs. You'll just have to find the right layer of water and the right animation.

Tips and tricks

Blobs can be used in a variety of ways, from floating to plunging lines.

With a floating line, it can be used on sight alone or with a jig using a nymph, chiro, diawl bach or cormorant fly. Placed between the blob and the fly line at about 1.20 m to 1.50 m.

Then in intermediate to S3 line, prospecting the water layers to find where the trout are active. One or more blobs, or a tippet blob and one or two flies on top can be used.

Any type of animation can work, and we'll adapt to the mood of the fish.

Chiros are the staple of pond, lake and reservoir feeding. It's worth giving them a try, even if they are sometimes less active in mid-winter. A little warmer water can hatch a few chiros, and the trout will certainly benefit.

The colors of this model can attract attention and trigger recalcitrant fish. Fluorescent orange is well detected and often causes trout to react.

Tips and tricks

I use this chiro on a train of two or three chiros depending on fish activity. This can be one floating chiro and two below on a gallows.

It can be mounted as a gallows fly by combining it with another fly like the pink blob described above.

In the chiro I often let my fly train work under the effect of the wind if it's present. The animation is done by knitting mainly in the absence of wind, or even short pulls. The aim is to find the layer of water where the fish are active and keep our fly in that zone as long as possible.

Les streamers rose peuvent être d'un redoutable efficacité notamment sur les poissons frais et par eaux claires et froides

3- Tagada fly

As mentioned above, pink is a very enticing color in the middle of winter. I mounted this fly a few years ago to create volume and annoy trout with a fly that jiggles a lot, pushes water and pulses. It has often served me well in various reservoirs.

The tagada fly is a fly I came up with using blob caterpillar on a streamer with a highly mobile tail. A trout magnet!

Tips and tricks

I often use it with a single fly, either floating or intermediate. I use it fast to very fast (rolly polly) to trigger aggressive strikes. With a floating line, you can often see the wave created by the trout(s) chasing it at full speed, then refusing or taking it violently.

It can, of course, be knitted or striped to vary the approach.

4- Blobby

The blobby is a combination of a booby and a blob. It provides a different silhouette that is compact and displaces water. It's an excellent fly for a variety of uses, whether as a sinking line for slow bottom fishing like a booby, or as a washing line to keep a train of flies in the right layer of water.

Entre un blob et un boobby, le blobby peut être utilisé de différentes manières et vous rapporter de belles prises
A cross between a blob and a boobby, the blobby can be used in a variety of ways to bring you some great catches.

Tips and tricks

A blobby can be mounted on an S5 to S7 plunge line on its own or as a booby train. It can be mounted above or below a booby.

For washing lines, use it as a tip with one or two stems. Depending on fish activity, it can be used as a float, intermediate or S3.

5- Egg fly

The Egg fly has also become a staple fly in reservoirs, especially in winter when trout are normally laying their eggs. It can sometimes catch fish when nothing else works!

Eggstasy loads up with water and flows smoothly. It's also livelier and therefore more attractive for slow fishing. It's also translucent, making it more realistic and egg-like than Egg-yarn.

Les imitations d'oeufs font parfois la différence notamment en plein hiver. Elles peuvent montées de différentes couleurs et avec ou sans bille

  • Assembly silk: UTC 70 orange
  • Tail and body: Eggstasy 6- Sockeye
  • Head: 3.2 mm orange brass ball

Tips and tricks

It's a simple fly that can be used in many ways. I use it most often for sight fishing when possible. Drop it in front of a sighted fish.

It can also be mounted on a washing line so that it hangs in the water.
