Fishermen, give your opinion to restore nature

The "Agir pour la nature 2025" preliminary consultation is a major national initiative launched by the French government to prepare the future national nature restoration plan, in application of the new European regulation adopted in June 2024.

Timetable and objectives

The consultation ends on August 23, 2025, so get involved to defend the biotopes that are also your playgrounds.

It aims to involve citizens, associations, local authorities, businesses and all stakeholders in defining the priorities of the "Acting to restore nature" plan, which will be submitted to the European Commission in September 2026 with targets for 2030, 2040 and 2050.

Context and European framework

This plan follows on from the new European regulation requiring each member state to restore a significant proportion of its degraded terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, in line with the Kunming-Montreal agreement (CBD 2022).

France also relies on its National Biodiversity Strategy 2030 to reinforce national protection and restoration actions.

Questions central to the consultation

  • Where to restore? What geographical and ecosystem priorities?
  • How to restore? What are the technical, regulatory and governance levers?
  • Why restore? What ambition and expected benefits?

Framing and transparency

The Commission Nationale du Débat Public (CNDP), an independent authority, oversees the consultation process, appoints guarantors and ensures that the public's contributions are taken into account.

A summary will be published in September 2025, and official feedback from the Ministry of Ecological Transition is expected in autumn 2025.

Upcoming calendar

Following the consultation phase, a first version of the plan will be drawn up and submitted for public consultation during June 2026, before being sent to the European Commission for validation in autumn 2026.

This consultation is an opportunity open to all to have a lasting influence on nature restoration policy in France and throughout the country. It aims to build an ambitious project to halt the erosion of biodiversity and revitalize ecosystems, taking into account the expectations and proposals of all parties involved.
