Sea bream fishing, a simple and fun technique for everyone

Sea bream is an easy species to catch. They are present on our coasts all year round, with a peak of activity in spring and summer. The end of the season is also a good time to catch them. During my last outing in the shallows, I took the opportunity to target this fish, which I rarely catch.

Madai, an easy-to-use technique

The advantage of this type of fishing is that it doesn't require any special equipment. The simplest technique is to use a madaï-type lure on which I insert a piece of squid or a shell.

Le madaï est redoutable pour la pêche des sparidés. Même s'il est pêchant sans appât, le nombre de touches est décuplé dès lors que vous venez y placer un morceau de calamar ou une coque.
The madaï is formidable for sparid fishing. Even though it can be fished without bait, the number of bites is increased tenfold when you place a piece of squid or a shell on it.

I also use a jig and place the bait on the hook. The second technique is to use a sliding rig with a 50 to 100 gram sinker, depending on depth, and a 50 to 80 cm stack finished with a strong iron 1/0 hook.

Le montage le plus simple, à savoir un plomb et une empile, est très efficace.
The simplest set-up, i.e. a lead and a stack, is very effective.

Fishing area search

At the end of the season, sea bream gather in impressive shoals.

A very nice detection of sea bream.

Some sonar detections indicate a very large number of fish under the boat. I prefer gravel or sandy areas, sheltered from the current, at depths of between 15 and 25 metres.

Which baits to use for sea bream?

Everyone has their own opinion on the subject. Cockles, mackerel, cuttlefish, squid, mussels and more. There are as many opinions as there are fishermen. Personally, I prefer cockle and squid.

The hulls are stored in an airtight box filled with salt. This not only preserves the bait for a long time without putting it in the fridge, but also hardens it, making it easier to bait on the hook. This way, I always have a few cockles on board in case I get the urge to fish for dorado.

The second bait I use is squid. It's a bait that holds extremely well on the hook and resists dorado attacks.

This fish doesn't grab the bait directly, but comes to nibble several times before taking it firmly. That's why you'll get a lot of bites where the hooking will come to nothing. A strip of squid securely attached to the hook will enable you to continue fishing despite the unshod bites.

Rod and reel selection for sea bream fishing

For this fishery, we are looking for a tactile rod with increased resonance.

I turn to a Rodhouse blank from North Fork Composites. The NFC SJ 706 IM, with a length of 2.13 m and a power of 15/45 grams, is ideal.
It has a good reserve of power to keep even the prettiest specimens in check, but above all excellent key feedback.

NFC carbon is one of the best in the business. I use a small reel in size 3000 or 4000 with PE 1 or 1.2 braid.
