Sea kayak fishing: 6 lures that worked well in 2024

After my 2024 catch report, the subject of my last article, let's take a look at the lures that made these catches possible. This year, I'll be highlighting 1 soft lure, 2 swimming fish, 2 metal lures and 1 cephalopod rig.

Swimming fish

As for swimming fish, I used the 3DB Jerkbait range from Yo Zuri a lot, as I did last year. 2 colors stood out this year. The pearly white "All White" and the juvenile "Gold Black". The former was very effective on bonito and sea bass. The latter on bass and pollack at the start of the season. These are 110 mm suspenders with mass transfer and noisemaker. They cast very well and can also be used for trolling. Their swimming depth is 2 m to 2 m 50.

Soft lure

I use them a lot too, especially when I'm looking for the spot with the elevator method and its variants. The Talashad from Astufish, a 120 mm sandeel imitation with a shad tail, is still at the top of my list. It's available in several colors, with more to come in 2025. Paired with 20, 30 and 45 gram heads, Texan or traditional rig. The color that worked so well in 2024 was Green Bass. It's a pity that for the 2025 season, the site will only open on May 1st for recreational anglers...

Metal lures

Used mainly on the hunt, metal lures have found their targets. The two pieces of scrap metal featured in this ranking arrived during the season.

The first is the Toba, a double-armed noisy jig cast from Explorer Tackle. Available in several weights and colors, the pink color has been a big hit on bass, mackerel and horse mackerel.

The second is a vibrating sinking lure from Trefle creation, the Maleira 68S, also in a pink color that worked well, the Yozakura Mirror. This vibrating blade made the Spanish mackerel rather voracious.

Assembly

The last lure to be featured is a rig rather than a lure, the Tataki rig. It's unquestionably the cephalopod rig of the year. Several articles have been written on this rig. Personally, I'm sticking with pink again, as it's clearly the color of the year. The jigs used are from the Flashmer catalog, EBI Q below and Calmero ultra floating above. This year has been an excellent year for squid, with great fishing on every dedicated outing. I've had the opportunity to write a few reviews here.

Of course, like all anglers, I like to try out the latest novelties, and in my 2024 season box, there are a few. That's the beauty of it, and it helps to avoid too many habits and certainties. While you shouldn't throw away what worked well the previous season, it's a good idea to try something new the following season, always with the aim of having fun. Kayak fishing wins you over...
