This magnificent canal was built in the 17th century under the direction of Pierre-Paul Riquet, a visionary engineer. His ambition was to create a navigable passage between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, avoiding the long detour through the Strait of Gibraltar. Construction began in 1666 and was completed in 1681, representing a remarkable feat of engineering for the time.
