Return of session / Kayak fishing on the Brest roads, a great activity

The fine weather is finally here and the forage fish are approaching the coast. An opportunity to go out kayak fishing on the Brest roads. Nice sea bass and mackerel for a great session.

First hunts

Take advantage of beautiful conditions

It was time for the winds to change direction and diminish in intensity, and now they have. With this change in weather, the situation is back to normal, and the fish are feeling it. The water temperature is correct, the feed is coming in and the first chases are appearing. This radical change in the weather means that we can see the first hunts taking place in my corner of the Brest roadstead, which has been very calm until now.

This was the case during a morning session. Early in the morning, at sunrise, I was overflown by numerous birds heading in the same direction. As I know my harbor fairly well, I think I know where they're going. After a good half-hour's pedaling, I finally catch a glimpse of what I'd been looking forward to all year. A real hunt, with fish jumping out of the water, splashing and lots of birds joining in the fun.

Numerous bars

As soon as we got there and cast, it was clear. The first catches are sea bass, mostly between 38 and 44 cm. They're on very small fish and I manage to catch quite a few on a small white shad, on a 10-gram head. I also caught a few on a blue swimmer, my famous Yo-Zuri 3DB Jerkbait. Everything else failed to catch anything - jigs, soft lures, other swimming fish - only these two lures stood out. Sometimes it's hard to know why one works and the other doesn't. These two lures don't look alike. However, these two lures don't look alike. For the 3 DB, I think it's the sound of the lure that makes them attack, but that's just me.

This hunt will last two hours, as you can see in the video below. A festival of sea bass, competition mackerel and small pollack, present in large numbers, one wonders what they were doing there... For the rest of the session, I'll take a long walk around the harbor, to take advantage of the sun, which has finally managed to break through the fog that's so present every morning these days. I'll take a break for a snack on a small spit of sand among the oyster rocks. I've packed my bento and the smoked herring salad will give me a boost for the end of the session.

Le leurre du jour
Lure of the day

On the way back, I come across a lot of bass activity, still the same size, more or less 42 centimetres, and still intent on attacking my Yo-Zuri 3 DB Jerkbait in blue. My session today lasted 08 h 00 with a good number of kilometers covered. I don't like staying on the same spot, I need to swallow miles on the water.

The return of the belle saison

The good weather, which has lasted for some time, the rising temperatures and the water temperature, which is now close to 18°C, have brought the forage fish back to the bay, and with them all the predators that hunt behind. One of my colleagues, a kayak fisherman, caught bonito on the same day, on another spot. I hope that this time, we can really say that the season is launched, the next sessions will confirm it, good summer to you...
