Good equipment for better fishing
Not all anglers are equipped in the same way, but certain tools are frequently found in the basic equipment of the reservoir angler.
Our aim is to provide you with the equipment you need to organize, fish and control your fish.
Fishing bag
A fishing bag is essential for carrying your tackle. In the reservoir, it's common to have several fly boxes, often of large size and/or capacity, extra line spools, fishing line, but also numerous miscellaneous accessories.
A waterproof bag is your best bet for keeping your gear dry during the often wet and cold autumn and winter months. Many brands offer them in different shapes and sizes.
Fly boxes
Fly boxes are an important element in classifying flies by technique, color, size, etc.
Every fisherman will have his own way of doing things, from the messiest to the neatest. It often depends on individual personality, but in any case, a well-ordered box saves time by making things clearer.
In reservoirs, many techniques are used. As a result, you need several fly boxes if you're an all-round angler. Dry fishing, nymphing, drowning, streamer, booby, blob, chiro, bung. Without having a box for each technique, which is an advantage, it is important to have many flies to meet the demands of trout.
Small equipment
There's a huge range of items and "gadgets" on the market that fly fishermen love. However, some are necessary, even mandatory, for proper fishing.
Here's a non-exhaustive list of the main tools you'll need.
- Pliers for unhooking fish and crushing barbs.
- A tool for storing used yarn that won't end up in the environment
- A thermometer to check the water temperature.
- A thread cutter or scissors to retie knots and change flies quickly.
- Spools of wire of various diameters.
Fishnet
A landing net is often essential for reservoir fishing. It allows you to shorten fights with fish and return them quickly to the water.
In reservoirs, from the shore, we recommend a landing net with a fairly long handle, usually telescopic.
It's a good idea to have a plastic mesh net that won't damage the fish or remove its mucus.
There are many shapes and sizes of landing net on the market.
Rod holders
When fishing reservoirs on a regular basis, we often use several rods fitted with different line densities to adapt to current conditions.
In this case, a rod holder is a necessary tool for transporting and storing them during the fishing trip.
There are very few on the market. You can make your own by DIY.
