Before going deeper into the subject, it is important to make a quick point about the difference in design between an inner tube float tube and a PVC.
The inner tube float-tube
This float-tube, which appeared about thirty years ago, and which knew thereafter various evolutions, is composed of an external fabric, rather fine, in which one slips PVC tubes.

The PVC float-tube
The PVC float-tube is similar to a semi-rigid boat. It is built with a thick and waterproof canvas, which has the function of containing the air and protecting from external damage.

1 - Solidity
The lack of solidity is a major problem on float tubes with inner tubes. To be more precise, the problem often comes from the inner tube, which is too fragile and can be easily punctured. It is possible to change a punctured tube, but this has a cost, not negligible, between 40 and 55 euros. Moreover, it is not guaranteed that this one is in stock, which implies a delay before being able to put it back in the water.

The PVC models are made of a thicker and stronger fabric, even if they are not indestructible, they are much more resistant and above all, they are repairable! In terms of longevity and safety, this type of model is clearly the one to prioritize.
2 - The bearing capacity
PVC float tubes inflate with a higher pressure than those with air chambers. Therefore, their maximum load is higher, we talk about 180 to 250 kilograms for the PVC models, against 120 to 160 kilograms for the float-tubes with chambers. This carrying capacity makes it easier to install an electric motor or accessories.
This lift also translates into a higher sitting position on the water and better maneuverability, as the PVC float tube has a smaller draft. The PVC models allow you to be higher on the water, which is important in winter when the water is cold. The angler is then less sunken under the surface of the cold water, with only the lower part of the legs submerged.
3 - Easy to store
PVC float tubes are a little less bulky, they fold easily, compared to the chambered float tubes which take more space, especially if they are without an inflatable seat. An advice, when you buy a float-tube of this type, look carefully at how it is folded, to do the same afterwards and store it easily in its cover.

In addition, the canvas of the chambered models takes a long time to dry, and often, we find ourselves having to dry it at home. Whereas it is enough to wait 5 minutes with a PVC, after the exit of fishing, so that it is dry, and to arrange it in its bag.
4 - The ease of inflation
Point that makes all the difference, and all those who have tube type float tubes know what I mean: PVC float tubes are easy to inflate! The problem with tube float tubes is that the tubes are not well positioned in their compartment. And very often, you have to deflate the tube to reposition it, several times until you find the right position. With a PVC float-tube, no problem, the float-tube is well inflated the first time, it's a real problem to eliminate!

5 - The price of the float-tube
At a cost of euros, a float-tube with chambers is less expensive than a PVC, and for a discovery of the practice without wanting to invest too much, it is tempting. However, their lack of reliability and the cost of air chambers must be taken into account. You have to look at the long term, because in the end, the PVC can be not so high as this. To avoid fighting with after sales services or waiting desperately for the necessary tube to be back in stock, I recommend to invest a little more and to have peace of mind on a PVC float tube.

6 - Resale
Even if you don't buy a float-tube with the aim of reselling it, before making your choice, consult resale sites to judge for yourself the price of the second hand. This price takes into account the reliability and the life span of the object. Many people resell their chambered model to switch to PVC. This means that the first model is mostly sold at a low price, and the second model is rarely sold at a fair price, thus limiting losses.
The similarities between PVC and inner tubes
Some points are too similar, to really take them into consideration. Among these, the weight, each model, regardless of its design, is between 6 and 12 kilograms. For the dimensions, even if we find more variety in the PVC models, with larger models, we are on something quite similar when we go to standard size models.
The shape is also common, with a V-shape made of two separate flanges, which has become a standard among all brands.

My experience
The majority of the points raised all point in one direction: PVC models are to be prioritized when making a purchase! Their price is higher at the time of purchase, but compared to the reliability and comfort of use they provide, they are well worth the investment.
I was very happy, about ten years ago, when the popularity of chambered float tubes exploded, to get one and to discover this new way of fishing. However, I have to admit that since the appearance of the PVC models, the old models are not really interesting anymore and it would be a pity not to take advantage of the last evolutions.
With my experience and after having used for several years both versions, I strongly advise to go for a PVC model, even for beginners.
