Building on what you have learned © Paul Duval

It's vacation time and for many, the discovery of unknown spots. Don't panic, there are some basic principles that will help you succeed in your sea bass fishing session. Don't change your habits too much.

There is always a fear of failure, of being left out, of missing out on a good time. However, by respecting a few basics on which you rely for the rest of the year, there is a way to get out of the game.

Keeping good habits

Découvrir de nouveaux spots
Discover new spots

At the end of July, I had the opportunity to spend a few days in Pornichet and to discover some magical spots. True to my habits, I approached these spots on the last two hours of the falling tide. I like to discover the rocks that appear as the low tide flows.

I exploit the end of the currents between two rock heads, watch the sea birds that dive and especially the size of the prey with which they come out of the water. I also work the beautiful sandy tongues that slope down gently.

Garder les principes de base
Keep the basics

All these principles that serve me the rest of the year and that there is no reason why it does not work here. Here, at the end of July, it is the surroundings of Les Evens, in front of the port of Pornichet, 40 minutes pedaling from the beach of Bonne Source. This small island of sand is surrounded by broken and pointed rocks that it is good to approach in calm weather.

Choosing the right lures

I chose an average coefficient of 60 so as not to have too much trouble against the current which is heading out to sea. I took a little bit of everything in lures, soft lures, swimmer fish in different heights and some surface lures.

The advantage of the propelled kayak is that as soon as there is at least 70 centimeters of water, it slips everywhere and quickly. So I find the end of the current between two rocks and exploit them, the first passages with soft lures are unsuccessful.

I pass to the lures of surface, in this case a 3 DR of Yo Zuri, I record my first fish quickly, bass with the quite black back, between 40 and 45 cm, not very big thus, but very nervous and powerful, but one must be able to make better!

I change lure again, I go under the surface with a 3 DB Jerkbait, still from Yo Zuri, in smelt color, I saw some under the surface. I exploit the deeper zones at the end of the current and the pretty ones are there, lazy as they are and waiting for the small fish to pass them.

I will make several nice fat fish, between 55 and 65 centimeters, which is more interesting. I will keep one nice one that will go on the vacation table as a raw fish.

A successful session

These ways of doing things, which I practice throughout the year, allowed me to succeed in my session on an unfamiliar and worked corner for the first time.

A nice session on unknown ground

As usual, I will have a snack break on this sandy island before going back, taking advantage of the place to keep in mind these vacation images. The flow is now reversed and the tidal current will help me to return quietly without forcing.

A break is necessary

On the road I will also make some mackerels, which will end up on the barbecue for the evening aperitif, long live the vacations ...
