The base, the rod and reel set
Fishing in a fun and efficient way requires a dedicated and pleasant to use set. Thanks to the evolution of equipment design, getting a good set is no longer expensive at all. The weight has dropped significantly and the quality of the rod materials has improved greatly. The main objective, when you practice this type of fishing, is to have fun.
The number of hits and the defense of these small fish offer great sensations for a beginner angler. The rods generally recommended are between 1m80 and 2m40, with a full colored tip for easier detection of the bites.
The reel must be adapted to the rod, a size 2500 or 3000 remains light enough not to unbalance the whole, while having a ratio and a capacity important enough to practice this fishing easily.
Home made or not?
There are a large number of different jigs available on the market, ready to use. Each rig has its own particularities, such as the size of the hooks, the lengths between the line body and the hook and the diameter of the line used in the rig. Making your own rigs allows you to choose and select from all the variables, the combo most suitable for your fishing.
Of course, making this kind of rig requires a minimum of knowledge about knots, the behavior of different diameters of line in the water, but the most difficult thing is to know what works at a given time and not at another. For most anglers who want to practice this technique for pleasure, I recommend buying commercial rigs, to avoid wasting precious time during a fishing day.
If, however, you want to fish this fishery full time, you will inevitably have to make your own rigs and modify them each season to find the ideal rig and multiply your results.
Choose the right line body
Historically, sea fishing was done with heavy sets, not very pleasant to handle, with line bodies made of 60 cent nylon. In the category of light tackle fishing, the first prices of quite correct sets are around 60 euros. To perfect these sets, fill the reel with large nylon is to be proscribed, it is now necessary to equip yourself with a braid.
Some of these braids can be very expensive, but in this type of fishing there is no need to spend 50 euros on a spool. The 4 strands braids, in spool of 150 or 300 m are more than enough for this kind of fishing. The braid allows to have a better capacity with the same resistance, a much better feeling of the touches as well as an easiness to split the water, avoiding to have a too strong effect of banner during fishing in drift.
