Presentation
The Choppo is a hard lure from the American brand Berkley and is available in 7.5, 9 and 12 centimeters. The construction of the lure, as well as the hooks and split rings used, is solid, so the lure is ready to fish right out of the box.
The main characteristic of this lure is its oversized propeller on its back part. This creates a noise which is very characteristic. This ability to make noise is very interesting for prospecting near obstacles while remaining on the surface, or to cover large areas thanks to its long range attraction.
The lure, thanks to the low sound it emits, does not go unnoticed and encourages the carnivores to come out of their hiding places. Finally, its price between 11.90 and 13.90 euros, depending on the size desired, is attractive for a hard lure, especially considering its ability to make fish and for its strength.
The colors
Originating from the United States, with a primary focus on black bass fishing, the colors available for this lure are very much geared towards this species, but they are well suited for use in our waters.
Among these, we find different shades of blue gill, natural shades in the whites, a frog green color and an all black lure, which is an interesting color not to be neglected. Indeed, black is an interesting top water color, when the sky is cloudy, or by weak luminosity.
Animation
The use of the choppo is very simple, you just have to bring it back in linear, on a slow and constant rhythm so that its propeller is activated. The continuous noise and the linear movement are the best combination to use this lure, which seems to annoy the predators and make them move away.
It is a lure that appeals to both beginners and experienced anglers, because it is really pleasant and visual to use. For my part, I often use it in areas where you have to prospect everywhere, for example in a lake or a shallow river, with a flat bottom, without any marks or obstacles to locate the fish precisely.
Target species
Pike, black bass and catfish are the 3 main species that will be reactive to this lure. The perch is also part of the species likely to be lured, especially in its 7.5 centimeters version.
What about the whooper plopper?
I can't present the choppo without talking about the River 2 Sea whopper plopper, as they are so similar that one could be led to confuse them. The latter was present on the market before the choppo, but if I have to compare the 2 models, I must admit that the choppo is more accomplished.
Indeed, on the Berkley lure the propeller is hard, while on the River 2 sea lure, it is made of a soft plastic, which can deform, even melt, and make the lure lose all its interest. The position of the tail hook on the Berkley gives a better release to the propeller, which gives a better ratio of fish taken on the hook and a better hold on the water. Finally, its sound is deeper and seems to appeal more to fish.
This does not mean that you should neglect the River 2 Sea lure, far from it, because it is also very good, I would say that they are complementary, and far from being identical when you look at them closely! One day one model will work better than the other, and vice versa, without really being able to explain it.
In the end
The chopper is a fun lure to use for both the beginner and the advanced angler. I find it perfect for introducing a child or beginner to surface lure fishing, and keeping their attention without them getting bored quickly.
