The mataguaro
The mataguaro is a fish found in South America. It belongs to the large cichlid family, of which there are some 30 subspecies. Fish in this family have torpedo-shaped bodies and beautiful patterns that vary in size and coloration according to their origins.
Typically, these fish measure up to 40 centimeters in length, with males slightly larger than females. This fish is much sought-after by aquarists. However, since it is very aggressive, it is often necessary to reserve an aquarium just for it.
Its interest for fishing lies mainly in its aesthetics, because for many of us, it's not every day that we come across such exotic species.

Where to find them?
During my stay in Colombia, we found them on the very edge, in areas with vegetation, in which they hide. You have to throw as close as possible to the edges and vegetation to hope to draw them out of their hiding places.
Which lures to use?
Soft lures, from 2 to 4 inches, jerkbaits minnows from 8 to 10 centimeters seem to be the most efficient lures to look for mataguaros.
Given the aggressiveness of this species, it is possible to catch them on slightly larger lures, but the important thing is to cast as close to the edge as possible!

Handling the mataguaro
The mataguaro has a rasp in its mouth, much like catfish.
It is possible to hold it by the mouth, but this may cause a few superficial wounds. Otherwise, it doesn't struggle too much out of the water and is easy to hold, although you should be sure to wet your hands before handling it to protect its mucus.
