Goby rockfishing or the school of lure fishing for children

The hardest part of introducing children to fishing is figuring out how to share the pleasures: the thrill of the bite, the hooking of the fish, the watching and stalking... Rockfishing for goby combines all these aspects.

There are many species of gobies in both fresh and salt water. Today's article focuses on rockfishing for gobies in the Mediterranean.

Understanding the fishing technique

Surprising or trivial as it may seem, goby fishing is a great way to learn the basics. No need for a long rod or heavy reel, it's easy to get the hang of. Goby fishing is affordable and fun, and can be practised from shore with light tackle.

Then there's no need to cast far and accurately. Gobies are edge fish, especially the big-headed goby which loves crevices in very little water. The child must then learn to steer his lure and manage his banner to slowly move the lure to the bottom near our goby's hiding place.

Fishing is visual, tactile and fun. You have to observe and find potential caches and bring your lure to them.

It's a fishery that demands concentration and precision in the strikes.

Basic assembly

Ideally, start with a 2 to 3 gram lead head, which is easy for an unaccustomed child to feel. A soft lure such as a shad, comma, worm or small invertebrate is attached to this head. That's all you need to get started.

A fluorocarbon tip serves as leader. There's no need to finesse, as the obstacles in which the gobies hide are abrasive and put the line to a severe test. A 10lbs fluoro (approx. 24/100) is a good compromise for this type of fishing.

Why the goby

The goby is a small predatory rock fish that offers several advantages. It's already sight fishing, where you can see the fish coming out of its hole. Then there's the added thrill of the goby quickly emerging from its hole to seize our lure. It may seem trivial, but for small anglers it's a real thrill. Last but not least, without talking about records, beautiful gobies can grow to 25 cm or more, which is a good way to start learning how to fight a fish and then go on to target bigger ones.

In my opinion, this is a real "school fish" that can be fished almost all year round in the Mediterranean and which, in addition to certain technical basics, allows you to experience your first pleasures and sensations with rod in hand!
