The red scorpion fish is a fish with atypical colors present on our coasts. It is not uncommon to come across a red scorpion fish when rockfishing in particular.

Presentation of the red scorpion fish

As its name indicates, the red scorpion fish (Scorpaena notata), not to be confused with the capon (Scorpaena scrofa), differs from other scorpion fish by its predominantly red color. Smaller than its cousin the brown scorpion fish, the red scorpion fish has imposing eyes. It rarely exceeds 15 cm. It is mainly found in the Mediterranean or on the Atlantic coast south of Brittany. The small red scorpion fish is found on rocky bottoms in depths exceeding 10 meters, but it is not impossible to find it at the edge of the sea sheltered from the light in small underwater caves.

Fishing for red scorpion fish

Less present than the brown scorpion fish, the red scorpion fish is more difficult to search specifically. It is while searching for the brown scorpion fish that you may come across a nice little red scorpion fish. Rarely alone, it likes some territories in particular as dark areas. Equipped with a small mouth, you will have to look for it with very small soft lures mounted on leaded heads preferably of bright colors or phosphorescent and scratch the bottom of the crevices.

Watch your fingers

Like the other species of the scorpenidae family, the red scorpion fish has venomous spines and in spite of its smaller size its venom seems to be tenfold, because its bites are very painful! As for all scorpenids, you have to seize the red scorpion fish by the mouth by wedging it between your thumb and your index finger. Note that its venom is thermolabile, so it is necessary to approach a heat source on the painful zone to attenuate its effects.
