It's quite possible to ice fish "blind", but the echo sounder is a great help and, above all, gives the angler a certain degree of confidence. Most modern echo sounders have an ice function. Did you know that?

Mobility

The echo sounder is an essential piece of equipment for ice fishermen. For a traditional foot angler, it's unusual to walk around with an echo sounder, but on ice, it's a great help. To make it easy to move around, it is placed with its battery in a dedicated case. The probe used is a special ice probe, often attached to a float, so it doesn't need a support and is easy to move and set up.

The benefits of an echo sounder for ice fishing

The echo sounder lets you know the depth of the area, see the lure, detect the presence of fish and determine the depth at which they are holding. This makes it easy to adjust the depth of the lure according to how the fish are holding, as they are not necessarily at the same depth from one day to the next.

How to use

A function with which we are generally unfamiliar is the ice function, which is nevertheless present on a large number of echo sounder models. This function indicates the lure and the presence of fish below or above it. Here, history is not used, as we are only interested in the present moment. All this is represented in the form of a circle, representing the entire water column. Notable events detected by the echo sounder are represented by a line. Reading is direct and every rise and fall of the lure or fish is instantly visible.

In addition to the confidence it gives the angler by showing the presence of fish in the hole where he's fishing, the echo sounder really does give the angler important information. Above all, it detects the holding depth of the fish. This makes it possible to adapt the lure's animation to stay as close as possible to the fish and arouse its interest.
